SOCUE (STUDENTS OF COLOR UNITY ELECTIVE) COUNCIL

SOCUE Council is an elective course offering African American Political Studies to support our schools cultural awareness and offer an affinity space for students of color. It is built on three core foundations that inform the student’s learning targets and scholarly objectives.

3 CORE FOUNDATIONS

1. Know your past to clearly see your way forward

2. Positive Community Members

3. Academic Excellence

Harlem Trip

Know your past to see your way forward. This is one of the three core principles of our Students of Color Unity Elective (SOCUE) and the motive force for their trip to Harlem. Thirteen students visited the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, New York Public Library, and caught live music in Marcus Garvey Park!

This journey back in black history was sponsored by Ms. Millie Clarke-Maynard, a long-time New Roots board member and owner of the black-owned business, Teacher On The Go Consulting Group LLC. Due to her generosity, these young people have a deepened understanding of their historical identity to carry with them into what lies ahead.

Honoring Harriet Tubman

Students of Color Unity Elective (SOCUE) visited the Harriet Tubman National Historical Park on a field trip. Students and chaperones alike had a fantastic time at this powerful historic site.
Huge thanks to New Roots board member Millicent Clarke-Maynard for generously sponsoring this field trip!

Senior Awards

SOCUE students are honored by Millie-Clark Maynard at our class of 2025 Senior Recognition Cenremony
