Ithaca, NY — New Roots Charter School would like to extend a warm invitation to the community for a Celebration of Learning event on Friday, June 7, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM. The showcase will take place on their school campus in the Historic Clinton House, providing an opportunity for students from all grade levels to share their achievements from the Spring semester with friends, family, and the wider community.

One highlight will be the presentation of student projects demonstrating how downtown Ithaca’s infrastructure can be redesigned to make our community more resilient as our climate changes. Transforming water, waste, and transportation systems, these projects were undertaken in Roots of Success, an environmental literacy and job training course taught at New Roots through a collaboration with Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Green Warriors program.

“These projects not only demonstrate the students’ environmental literacy but also their creativity, problem-solving skills, and commitment to creating a more sustainable future,” said Patrick Lynch, course instructor.

Research consistently emphasizes the importance of student reflection and the presentation of learning to external audiences, as it enhances the educational experience and deepens learning. The Celebration of Learning at New Roots is designed to showcase a mix of student displays and presentations led by the students themselves.

“We believe that when students have the chance to share their work and experiences with a wider audience, it not only boosts their confidence but also makes the learning process more meaningful,” said David Streib, New York State Master Teacher and New Roots Education for Sustainability Coordinator.

The community is invited to attend and participate, celebrating the accomplishments of New Roots students. Your presence will provide valuable encouragement as students gain perspective on the wider importance of their learning.
