Education for Sustainability Coordinator
David Streib has a deep commitment to understanding his students to provide them an education that is relevant, engaging, and appropriately challenging. He earned his B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from Alfred University, and a M.S.Ed. from SUNY Oswego in Curriculum and Instruction. During his time as an engineer, David developed materials and processes for the biomedical and aerospace industries. He is also a fluent Spanish speaker. For 3 years, he served families from diverse regions in Latin America in his role as a medical interpreter in Syracuse, NY while earning his Master’s Degree. His involvement in two disparate career fields previous to teaching has provided David a broad perspective on how to help students develop a well-rounded skill set for a successful life post high school. In his 11th year at New Roots, David is passionate about and deeply committed to helping students recognize their sense of personal power, meaning, and contribution to a better world through an education that is engaging, relevant, and thought-provoking. This is at the heart of an Education for Sustainability.
David is a New York State Master Teacher, a Knowles Science Teaching Fellow, and the recipient of a Fulbright Teacher for Global Classrooms award. These recognitions support his interest and effectiveness in inspiring students to explore the world, recognize perspectives, communicate ideas, and take action. He enjoys spending time with his wife and son, running, being outdoors, and practicing Spanish by reading literature from Latin America. David is thrilled to be teaching at New Roots, and sees his role at the school as a natural integration of his previous experiences.
