Limited Seats for the 2016-2017 School Year at New Roots

Less than ten seats remain in the freshman class at New Roots Charter School for the 2016-2017 school year, according to Rebecca Cutter, Community Learning and Outreach Coordinator.  New enrollment applications are up by 17% compared to a year ago, and the school anticipates a freshman waiting list by September based on enrollment trends over the past five years.


“Now in our eighth year, we are seeing strong demand for our truly unique small downtown public high school,” said Cutter.

For hundreds of millions of years, Earth has supported life, and life has in turn influenced the Earth. Changes in the Earth’s climate (over hundreds of millions of years) have resulted in the evolution of life to survive, while such adjustments by life have influenced the dynamics on Earth. Our modern lifestyle has introduced rapid changes to our environment, disrupting the equilibrium that had existed long before. The Haudenosaunee knew how to exist in balance with this equilibrium, and modern society can learn a lot from the knowledge they held.

UPCYCLING FASHION: Young Sustainability Activist & Designer Seeks Local Support

New Roots Charter School senior Zoë Larson is reaching out to the Ithaca community for businesses, organizations and individuals to promote a more sustainable fashion culture. Her “wearable conversation pieces,”designed to educate and inspire, will culminate in an art show and a benefit raffle on May 6.

Zoë’s senior year capstone project is focused on upcycling fashion. That means making unique fashion pieces from otherwise unused garments, for instance, using sweaters with holes, or leather pieces that have been stained or cut, to make interesting handbags, legwarmers or scarves.
