Upper School English and History Teacher
Teaching became my career because I wanted a job that made a difference in the lives of others, not just one that paid the bills. When I was in high school, I did not always make good decisions as a student. I attended school because that is what teenagers did. To me, it seemed that the best students in all my classes were just lucky that they were smarter than most. Eventually, I learned that being a successful student was more about determination. When I see a student either struggling or not caring, I remember that I, too, rarely made the honor roll in high school and often preferred other activities. As I look at my students, I sometimes see myself. I achieved because others believed in me, and I aim each day to believe in my students and encourage them to be their best.
While I enjoy playing baseball, tennis, and golf, words have also provided much enjoyment in my life. I am always reading, and my love for words extends to crossword puzzles, Scrabble, and other word games. Classical music is on constantly in my home, whether reading or working. I hope to learn to curl now that I have moved to Ithaca.
A dream brought me to New Roots and to New York; I want to teach my students to go after their dreams. New adventures await them. Young people are already beginning to shape the future. As I teach, I want my students to imagine and dream a better world for themselves.
