Meet our Artist-in-Residence, Todd Ayoung. In the past he has taught Art History, Critical Theory and Studio Art, at New York University, University of New Haven, Rochester University, Cooper Union, Lafayette College and The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, Denmark. Todd has been with New Roots from the start and teaches Studio Art and Painting. In our art classes, students are provided a variety of materials and guidance. They are encouraged to come up with something they are interested in through both experimentation and observational skills.

Ithaca Festival Retrospective at the New Roots Elevator Music and Art Gallery

An exhibit dedicated to the art of the Ithaca Festival is on exhibit at the Elevator Music and Art Gallery at New Roots Charter School, 116 N. Cayuga St. (the Clinton House).

The exhibit, which looks back at the past 38 years of the festival, is entitled “Celebrating the Artist in Everyone,” with a display of posters, buttons, T-shirts, artwork and photos.

New Roots Students Become Teachers of Humanitarian Law

Seniors Emily Feavearyear and Soren Mortensen had a novel idea for their required graduation project. They wanted to teach a class at their own school. Now they (and teacher Maria Gimma) are not only instructing their peers in a year-long elective, but they are also taking their knowledge and teaching skills to Ithaca High School (for Social Justice Week), to Wells College (Annual Activist Symposium) and Tomkins Community College this April 12th, and—they hope again—to Washington D.C.
