Steel Drum Ensemble in Ithaca College World Music Festival

Yesterday (Sunday, October 23rd), New Roots Steel Drum Ensemble performed in the first annual World Music Festival to be held at Ithaca College by their music department. David Ferreira and his steel drum students performed select works from their ever-developing reportoire, ranging from caribbean and southern tropical classics to an all-american Star Wars medley. Fearless and knowledge-bound leadership coupled with young fortitude and focus made this show extremely engaging.

Shjon discovered his passion for culinary arts and local farming at New Roots

When Shjon moved to Ithaca from Philadelphia as a sophomore in 2015, he was eager to fulfill his requirements for graduation and move on to college and career. I was surprised when on top of his full course load he enthusiastically joined the soccer team, the track team, the entrepreneurialism club, volunteered to host visitors at open houses, sold fresh fruits and vegetables at Ithaca’s Congo Square Market, worked as a group leader at the Youth Farm Project and took on a part-time job as a server at the McGraw

New Roots Steel Drum Ensemble in IC’s First World Music Festival

This summer the New Roots Steel Drum Ensemble was invited to participate in a world music festival at Ithaca College!

The festival will bring together accomplished organizer musicians and teachers who have appeared on Broadway and Saturday Night Live to host music from around the world: America, Africa, Trinidad, Japan, India, Brazil and Argentina.

New Roots Charter School is proud to present its cultural repertoire at a full day experience ranging from African Dance to Japanese Taiko. See the calendar for details!

New Roots is Ithaca's School of Wizardry

Ithaca's Wizarding Weekend is a now-annual festival event in downtown Ithaca, from Press Bay Alley to Dewitt Park. The event is an independent, community-based celebration of the spirit and artistry of Harry Potter, created by a Boxy Bikes employee.

Now, New Roots Charter School is participating in Wizarding Ithaca School of Wizardry! Join us between 12 and 2pm, the Clinton House will be open for wizarding activities! 

The porch will flourish with activity from 11am-4pm. Argus Flinch will be telling stories of magical history.

New Roots Art Program Receives Generous Donation!

Joan Johnston of Ithaca NY donated over 80 canvases to the New Roots Charter School Art Program. The canvases belonged to the late Mr. Robert Johnston, who studied animals at Cornell and enjoyed painting wildlife in his free time.

New Roots is grateful to Mrs. Johnston for her generous donation, which will be put to good use by students enrolled in the Concurrent Enrollment Painting Class through TC3. 

New Roots at First People's Festival and Apple Harvest Festival

The Caregiver Action Committee got together at New Roots last Saturday to sell hand pies on our front porch (picture below). The committee (CAC) got together the day before to bake and discuss future fundraising events with proceeds going to NRCS student activities. There will be a Caregiver Action Committee meeting this Friday at New Roots- 7-8:30pm! Free Food Fridays

Free Food Fridays was established as a subprogram of the NRCS Farm-to-School Program in order to grant students access to healthy food over the weekend, and give all a healthy snack to end the week.

Parents/Volunteers/Caregivers pick up boxes of donated food from the food pantry and deliver it to our school.  Items include fruits, vegetables, bagels, rice, etc.  Anyone in the school can take what they want!

Curriculum Night!

Caregivers are encouraged to attend our first 2016-2017 Curriculum Night to meet their students' teachers and advisory leader. Reception will be held at 6:45pm on September 27th in the new lobby, located on the 2nd Floor.

Caregivers will be following a modified M-W-F schedule for their students. Caregivers with more than one student can pick and choose which classes they want to attend! Students are welcome but not required to attend.

Getting Oriented for the New Year

Our staff have been hard at work putting together the educational content and developing the vision for the 2016-17 school year. New families and students gathered at CSMA last night to meet the staff and get their fall schedules! Teachers, administrators, and involved caregivers introduced themselves said words about the New Roots experience, and then had intimate conversation. Families and staff also brought desserts to share and New Roots gave away T-Shirts from previous years.
