You are warmly invited to our Open House on Sunday, March 5th 2017, 1-3p.m. to meet our students, teachers, and school administrators.  


Come learn how our innovative, student-centered environment engages students in learning opportunities that bring out the best in them!  


Students who live anywhere in the wider Ithaca region are welcome to attend our tuition-free public high school authorized by the State University of New York.  We prepare students for life after high school by bringing out the best in them through personalized, real-world learning.

Reel Big Fish Visit!

Last Fall, Reel Big Fish visited the music room to teach their songs to students in the New Roots Rock Band.

David Ferreira said of the visit: "Students selected a Reel Big Fish song over the summer to be included in our repertoire for this year. I reached out to the group through a friend of mine that is the current trombonist when I saw they were coming to Ithaca on their US Tour.

School Closed

New Roots Charter School will be closed Tuesday, January 24th due to the continued winter weather advisory, snow, ice and poor driving conditions in our region. Caregivers are advised to keep their students at home. Be safe!  

Midterm and Regents Exam Week at New Roots

January 24-27th is testing week for New Roots Students.  Students may be scheduled for Regents exams and/or a midterm.  The link below is to the testing schedule.  Please pay close attention to when you or your student should be at school this upcoming week!

Unless students have an appointment with a teacher, they should only be at school this week when they have a test scheduled.  Lunch will be provided each day of testing.

"My toddler refers to all elevators as alligators, for him I am converting the non-functioning historic steam elevator into an inverted diorama with pythons and alligators, reptiles battling to be top predator in the Everglades."

New Roots Charter School Awarded Five Year Charter Renewal

On Thursday, January 5, 2017, the State University of New York’s Board of Trustees Committee on Charter Schools awarded New Roots Charter School a five-year charter renewal without conditions by unanimous vote. The school’s third charter term will be from July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2022.


The Renewal Recommendation Report states, “New Roots’ academic program is strong, effective, and embodies its mission and vision of creating an academic program characterized by education for sustainability as an integrating principle for applied interdisciplinary studies.”

Student Spotlight: Labrae!

Labrae, a junior at New Roots Charter School, moved to Ithaca from Philadelphia in her sophomore year.  She’s an original member of the Students of Color Unity Club (SOCU) at New Roots. According to Labrae, “the group was formed to work on racial issues in our community,” and to discuss “the past to present, how slavery has been replaced by mass incarceration”. The club studied the North Dakota Access Pipeline and human rights abuses against Native American Water Protectors, and made an Anti-DAPL banner which was delivered to Standing Rock.

Young Writers Night: Open Mic, Poetry Slam

New Roots Charter School’s third Young Writers Night is coming up- we welcome any and all for a night of poetry, prose, and stories written by young folks from Ithaca and the surrounding area. The night will start out with an open mic, followed by a poetry slam with first and second place prizes. If you enjoy writing, come with a piece or a few, or stop in to see some amazing performances!


The event will be taking place at the Sacred Root Kava Lounge and Tea Bar (103 S Geneva St, Ithaca) from 5-7pm on January 13th. The age range for performers is 13-25, and sign up is at the door.

"Jude Meyers Thomas explores color and form as separate but related vocabularies and is most creative in the fulsome space between pure representation and pure color. Vivid hues, daring shapes, and a deft exploration of possibility bring solace as we all wait for the Solstice."
