New Roots in Common Ground High School's Program

on Fri, 12/02/2016 - 14:27

This week, a small group of New Roots students and staff took a trip to New Haven, CT to visit Common Ground High School. Common Ground is a small charter high school established by the New Haven Ecology Project, a non-profit organization that runs several environmental education programs. The Common Ground campus is located just a few minutes from the center of New Haven and includes an educational garden, a market garden, chickens, and goats, all surrounded by forest. Common Ground has created "Teaching Our Cities", a 1-year program designed to work with six urban public high schools in what's called a "Community of Practice" to share experiences and work together to support each school's capacity-building project. The New Roots Teaching Our Cities Team presented its own capacity-building project to providing all students consistent, mission-driven learning experiences related to urban environment work that moves them towards our school-wide outcomes, with an emphasis on building foundation in the lower school.
